Hurricane Igor intensifies in Atlantic Ocean

The hurricane known as Igor is getting brawnier, with winds up to 80 mph (130 kph) as it continues moving across the Atlantic Ocean, the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said Sunday.

At 4 a.m. ET, Igor was 1,230 miles (1,980 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands,. It was headed west at about 18 mph (30 kph), but it was expected to slow down in forward movement over the next couple of days.

"Igor is expected to gather strength and become a dangerous Category 3 on Monday, and may reach Category 4 strength on Tuesday or Wednesday," said CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect as of Sunday morning, the hurricane center said. The middle of the hurricane is not projected to reach any major landmass by Friday.
